"I'm No Longer The Youngster"

George Feels Like He Is No Longer The Youngster On The Grid, Will He Finally Start Acting Like It Too?

Russell's New Chapter: From Young Gun to Team Leader

George Russell, once the fresh-faced rookie of Formula 1, is now embracing a new role as Mercedes' most experienced driver for the 2025 season. At the ripe old age of 27, Russell finds himself in the unexpected position of team veteran alongside 18-year-old wunderkind Kimi Antonelli.

"There are a lot of great young drivers coming onto the grid, and it makes you realise you are no longer the youngster," Russell mused, perhaps while adjusting his metaphorical reading glasses1.

The Changing of the Guard

With Lewis Hamilton's surprise move to Ferrari, Russell has been thrust into the spotlight as Mercedes' lead driver. It's a position he seems both excited and slightly bemused by:

"I am entering a new chapter in my career. I am ending my beginning and entering the mid stage," Russell explained, sounding like he's having a quarter-life crisis in the fastest way possible1.

Age is Just a Number (Unless You're in F1)

Russell couldn't help but point out the changing landscape of F1:"Lewis was 29 when he joined Mercedes and started winning all those championships, and Michael [Schumacher] was early 30s at Ferrari. Nowadays everyone starts younger and younger – my debut came at 201."

One can almost imagine Russell shaking his head, muttering "Kids these days" as he watches Antonelli effortlessly navigate the team's simulator.

The Russell-Antonelli Dynamic Duo

Despite the age gap, Russell is excited to work with his new teammate:"He is such a fantastic driver," Russell gushed about Antonelli. "He does not have the experience yet, but I am sure he will be up to speed very quickly1."One can't help but wonder if Russell will be giving Antonelli advice on both racing lines and how to file taxes.

The Road Ahead

As Mercedes aims to reclaim their championship glory, last achieved in 2021, Russell feels prepared for the challenge:"I feel ready now to fulfil roles at the team, but the most important part of that is driving as quickly as possible, and I feel in a good place to do that1."With the 2025 season fast approaching, all eyes will be on Russell and Antonelli as they unveil their new challenger on February 24th. Will it be the car that brings Mercedes back to the top? Or will Russell find himself longing for the days when he was the young upstart with nothing to lose? One thing's for certain: in the high-speed world of Formula 1, growing up happens in the blink of an eye – or in this case, the flash of a checkered flag.
